The town of Guarare celebrates its anniversary on January 21st. As part of the celebratory activities, the Gabriel Villarreal Folklore Academy organizes the National Cumbia Festival as a way of preserving the cumbia music of Panama.

The event features an performances of different folk music genres and dances by the students of the academy. These are children and youths who cultivate the heritage of Panama. However, the main attraction is the accordion contest, sponsored by Melo Group. In 2017, the winners of the contest were:
1st place: Ronald Bravo
2nd place: Eraclides Amaya
3rd place: Nazario Barrios

We congratulate the town of Guarare and the organizers of the festival for a great event. To our readers, we strongly recommend attendance of this festival if you are in Panama during mid-January.
