National Cumbia Festival
The event was opened by the students of the Gabriel Villarreal Folklore Academy, of Guarare.
This academy teaches children and youth how the practices of different folk elements such as traditional music.

From an early age, students learn to appreciate our cultural identity.
In this way, the continuity of our traditions is achieved.
The program continued with a discussion about the history of our cumbia music.
Right after the academic presentation, a happy group of dancing people arrived in front of the stage.
They escorted Miss January 21st, who then moved to the stage to preside over the celebrations.
Meanwhile, the accordion players registered in the contest were getting ready for performing.
The judges were also ready for the competition.
Finally, the main event of the festival began: The accordion contest.
The audience followed all performances with great attention.
There were very young contestants in the event.
Also, there were other contestants still young, but with more experience.
And even contestants with decades of experience in the folk scene in Panama, such as Mr. Eraclides Amaya.
While the jury discussed the performances, Mr. Victor Zarate, from Melo Group, spoke about the importance of preserving our traditional culture.
The results arrived and the third place was for Nazario Barrios.
Mr. Eraclides Amaya placed in second.
And the winner of the contest and of a gold medal was Ronald Bravo.

The town of Guarare celebrates its anniversary on January 21st. As part of the celebratory activities, the Gabriel Villarreal Folklore Academy organizes the National Cumbia Festival as a way of preserving the cumbia music of Panama.
The event features an performances of different folk music genres and dances by the students of the academy. These are children and youths who cultivate the heritage of Panama. However, the main attraction is the accordion contest, sponsored by Melo Group. In 2017, the winners of the contest were:
