Saint Sebastian Fair at Ocu 2017
Each country fair has an entrance arch. The one at Ocu reflects elements of the town's traditional architecture.
The fair is named after St. Sebastian, Patron Saint of Ocu, Roman soldier and Christian martyr.
Traditional handicrafts have a important place at this fair. One of the most popular are the montuno attire for men.
Cutarras, the handmade sandals of the campesinos of Panama, were available at several stands.
Also present were the white hats, very representative of the Ocu area.
Some of the fair stands were actually thatched-roof traditional huts.
Many cultural performances take place during the fair at its main stage, seen here.
Delicious and filling heritage dishes were available at several stands all over the fair.
A very interesting stand was the one by the Environment Ministry. They showcased handicrafts made from recycled materials.
In the back area of the fair, there is a small lake. Sometimes, boatrides are offered to visitors.
Local produce is also shown and promoted at the fair. Ocu has very fertile lands.
The male tulo, a rare agricultural product was prominently displayed at the fair.
Cattle raising is another activity common around the town of Ocu.
Horse riding and equine show are also important events held during the fair.
One of the first country fairs held every year in Panama is the Saint Sebastian Fair, organized by the town of Ocu during the second half of January. The fair has a strong cultural and tourist flavor, with traditional handicrafts being a big draw. Also, local agricultural and animal husbandry activities are showcased in the event.
The fair honors Saint Sebastian, who was a Roman solider who addopted Cristianism and was martyred because of that. He is the Patron Saint of the town of Ocu.
Do not miss the chance to see some traditional dances, bring home handmade items and taste the local gastronomy at the fair.
